All the clues were there

My first clue was the lightness of the morning and the smell of sewage. Then a trail of playing cards from the post box to the village apothecary. Odd, its been closed for years. The cards were ‘arranged’ around a single brown shoe. A woman’s I think. One card remained in the case;  the ace of spades. And the topiary was gone from the Balti house, again! Was this the nature of things here in the shadow of Stonehenge? Later I passed an alley where a lurid poster shouted “Children admitted free!” Its confirmed then: the circus is in town.
