Patio Plants

First let’s see if I can get these to upload:

I re-used some soil from another pot to refresh the pot my avocado is in, and several plants came up with it that now look like this.

On a recent trip to the recycling bin I rescued this bamboo or whatever it is, and a couple of tiger lilies (not shown.)

And these are a couple of seeds I planted in late winter and they are doing great! I don’t know what they are though…either lemons or peppers. Too early to tell.

My pride and joy though, are these little fellas:

THOSE are Tamarind seeds I planted. The wild thing is, I got them from some ginger candy I bought at a chinese shop.

The candy was described like this:

  • Sour, pure natural tamarind without any preservatives or artificial ingredients
  • Covered in a mix of sugar and salt (commonly found in Thailand the same chile/sugar/salt mix offered with sliced mango)
  • Ingredients are tamarind, sugar, salt
  • Product of Thailand

Here it is on Amazon:

in the middle of each candy was a pit, and I threw out quite a few before I got the idea of planting them. The only prep I made for them was to score the outside of the seed and let it soak a few hours in water before planting. Lord knows what those seeds went thru before ending up here in Indiana.  Hope they survive!

  1. It’s really hard to tell from the photo….but it’s possible the top one is a sunflower…or maybe a Russian sage. My russian sage has already bloomed, and I don’t remember what the buds look like. I guess you’ll figure it out when it blooms.

I’ve got the palm type thing (not bamboo)…also don’t remember what it’s called. It’s a bitch to keep alive. Good luck with it.

  2. The top one opened up this morning and it IS a sunflower. I thought it might have been a thistle of some kind, but I’m amazed. The sunflower seeds were in the ground over a year before they came up. Now I have 6 of them and they will soon out grow the avocado.
I can give you a better shot of the pepper/lemon plant but as you say I’ll know when it puts out flowers and starts growing little peppers on it. That’s my guess now, though I was excited when it looked like I’d grown lemons from a pip.

The tamarind is very slow going, its 8 months old and barely 2 inches tall. I’ll be watching that one closely.

    Thanks for the input!
